Soaking Rains Nourish Richmond Gardens. Greenhouse in full swing.
The Spring gardening season is finally here and how great it is to get lots of rain following the drought conditions we had last summer! Those of us with rain barrels stocked up this past weekend.
The Tricycle Gardens greenhouse is in full swing with lots of cool season vegetables getting ready for transplanting into the gardens. Volunteers are helping with watering, planting, and transplanting at the greenhouse. We are growing a variety of lettuce, Swiss chard, kale, broccoli, and cauliflower. Tomatoes and peppers are growing and we are seeding our many basil varieties. This year we are also growing many flowers and herbs that will attract beneficial insects and pollinators.
We started peas, spinach, and beets in the ground this week at the Neighborhood Resource Center Children’s Garden. The Winchester Greens Children’s Garden workday was rained out; however the soaking rains will be great for loosening up the subsoil during the “double digging” we will be working on as soon as it dries out a bit later in the week.
Coming soon: Sale of cool weather vegetables from the greenhouse.
