Free lecture by apple historian, author, and orchard consultant Tom Burford: Apr. 30, 2011

The Town of Farmville’s Tree Board has invited Tom Burford – an apple historian, author, and orchard consultant – to speak on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 10:30 AM in the Meeting Room of the Farmville-Prince Edward Community Library at 1303 West Third Street in Farmville, VA. This is FREE and open to the public. Please spread the word! 

Tom Burford conducts workshops on orchard management and apple tree grafting, conducts apple tastings, and lectures across the country. He specializes in fruit tree restoration, re-creation, and design at historic sites and private estates. Tom consults worldwide with landscape architects, designers, commercial and backyard orchardists, as well as academic institutions. A longtime advocate of sustainable agriculture and local food production, he actively supports the Slow Food and RAFT (Renewing America’s Food Traditions) programs.
 
Earlier in his life, Mr. Burford operated the firm, Burford Brothers, of Monroe, Virginia which grew and marketed hundreds of heirloom and modern varieties of fruit trees. After forty years of operation, Tom closed the nursery operation in 1997 to devote himself to full time writing, consulting, and presenting lectures, workshops, and seminars.

More than 40 vendors – including Tricycle Gardens – fill Maymont’s Carriage House Lawn with every imaginable herb as well as annuals, perennials, trees, vegetables, and herbal products and crafts for this one-of-a-kind event.

Vanishing of the Bees, narrated by Ellen Page, takes a piercing investigative look at the economic, political and ecological implications of the worldwide disappearance of the honeybee. The film highlights the positive changes that have resulted due to a tragic phenomenon known as “Colony Collapse Disorder.” Providing viewers with tangible solutions they can apply to their everyday lives, Vanishing of the Bees unfolds as a dramatic tale of science and mystery, illuminating the greater meaning surrounding the relationship between humankind and Mother Earth. We are gearing up for another great year at Tricycle Gardens, and need your help!  The greenhouse gets rolling in mid Feb, and farm prep starts soon. We will also be building out the *NEW* Center for Shared Urban Ecology at our *NEW* HQ! There is gardening, farming, building, growing, office work and more to be done! We get dirty!
