Join us for a fall volunteer work day in our permaculture display garden at the Science Museum’s Green Acre. Tricycle Gardens staff and volunteers will demonstrate sheet mulching, a technique that seeks to the emulate the littler layer of a forest floor in the home or community garden. Organic materials, including newspaper, cardboard, tattered cloth, and wood chips, are strategically layered to suppress weeds, retain water and nutrients, and eventually break down and add organic matter into the soil, improving soil structure. New plantings can be placed right into the sheet mulch! Known to many gardeners as “lasagna mulching,” this activity is rewarding, and fun to boot! After the demonstration, you’ll have the opportunity to put your new knowledge into practice by helping us sheet mulch the garden. Wear appropriate outdoor clothing, bring a water bottle, and bring some gloves if you have them!!

Start: October 20, 2011 8:00 am
End: October 20, 2011 11:00 am
Venue: Science Museum of Virginia
